Mission: Wounded Marine Outdoors!
Get me the Hell out of Here!
You won’t find a Marine screaming this on the battlefield, but an injured Marine stuck in the confinement of a room at Portsmouth Naval Hospital or at the Wounded Marine Brigade at Camp Lejeune has no shame when they yell, “Get me the hell out of here!”
Today, there are literally tens of thousands of our soldiers recovering from wounds both seen and unseen, sustained while in service to our country. The mission of the Wounded Marine Outdoors Program is to help them find physical and mental recovery through the therapeutic power of the outdoors. Many of these heroes once shared a love for the outdoors but because of their injuries will never be able to experience in the same way again. But we are here to help them regain hope that they can, indeed, still participate.
One of our most exciting programs for 2010 is a project called “The Boathouse.” The Boathouse is currently in planning and design phase, and if all goes as planned will begin construction this spring. The boathouse is a rustic but modern and well-equipped place for our wounded to eat and enjoy some down time and recreation while they hunt, fish, canoe, kayak, or do any number of other outdoor activities on a peaceful 120 acres located in a Northeast North Carolina, less than an hour from Hampton Roads, Virginia, and just a little more from Camp Lejeune. Additionally, The Boathouse will be completely handicapped accessible and equipped with a kitchen and dining area
We believe that these men and women gave of themselves to ensure the freedom of our great country, some of them sacrificing their chance of fulfilling lifelong dreams for their future. Our mission is to renew their spirits by showing them that there are many, many people who are truly grateful for their sacrifice want to say “you are not forgotten.” These many are the individuals and corporate sponsors who generously give to help offer our wounded the opportunity to regain health and hope for the future.
